Surgical Rehab

Call 901-756-1650

If your doctor has prescribed physical therapy after surgery, it is because he or she believes it will play a key role in recovery.  Anyone who undergoes orthopedic surgery will benefit from post-operative physical therapy. In fact, physical therapy after your procedure can determine the difference between a successful surgery and a failed surgery.

The Smith Clinic for Physical Therapy specializes in postoperative care that focuses on functional and manual physical therapy.  We work with you and your surgeon to match your surgery with the most appropriate therapy for you, setting short and long-term goals to put you on the fastest path to recovery.

Working on muscle and joint issues, giving attention to the specific areas operated on, physical therapy will help:
  • prevent blood clots from forming
  • restore muscle strength
  • improve flexibility
  • and recover your range of motion

It will also keep you from further injury, improve your pain levels and reduce the chance of scar tissue formation.

A patient’s ability to regain motion and strength and ultimately return to their daily activities depends on physical therapy.  Whether you’re planning ahead to take advantage of physical therapy or will not know if you need it until after your surgery, we can help evaluate your post-surgical rehabilitation areas of focus and talk you through when you can expect to be back to your normal routine.  Call us to today to ensure your road to recovery after surgery is a successful one!

Post-Surgical Treatment

We treat the full spectrum of musculoskeletal injuries, including but not limited to:
  • Shoulder/rotator cuff
  • Knee (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL)
  • Hips (e.g., joint replacement)
  • Back and neck
  • Foot and ankle
  • Wrist and elbow

Pre-Surgery Benefits

In some cases, flexibility, mobility or range of motion needs to be improved prior to surgical repair. Our physical therapists can alleviate certain problems that might complicate the procedure. In some cases, physical therapy can minimize the scope of the operation, or even help you avoid surgery.

Team Effort

We provide your doctor with detailed notes on your condition, and follow his or her recommended protocols. This “team” approach helps produce an effective and customized program to help you recover and prevent reinjury.

Traction Therapy

Traction is an additional treatment option that draws two adjacent bones apart from each other in order to increase their shared joint space. It also stretches the soft tissue that surrounds the joint, which can take pressure off compressed discs. In mechanical spinal traction, a patient lies on a table and a physical therapist uses a series of ropes, slings and pulleys to relieve pressure.
